Performing safety analysis for collaborative robot operations

The thesis would involve the following steps (can be adjusted to research interest of the candidate):

• Literature review, identifying relevant concepts and algorithms on risk assessment for safety analysis.
• Propose a suitable safety analysis technique for an automated warehouse logistics usecase using collaborative robots.
• Model and implement the safety analysis technique for collaborative and non-collaborative scenarios of the selected automated warehouse logistics usecase.
• Potentially use/link to a simulating environment for testing of the software for the presented usecase.
• Performance evaluation for collaborative and non-collaborative scenarios.

We are looking for 1 open-minded student who seek a challenging research work with the freedom to propose and develop your own ideas. To be successful in this thesis work the candidate(s) would need the following:
• MSc studies in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar area.
• Excellent programming skills in C/C++, or Matlab
• Other preferable programming languages Python or Java
• Good knowledge of concepts in Artificial intelligence, robotics, etc.
• Knowledge of safety analysis techniques, risk assessment algorithms, ROS operating system is a bonus
• Like to build end to end prototypes and concepts
• Be fluent in English.

In an automated warehouse where autonomous robots load trucks with products while sharing the same environment with humans, a proper safety analysis should be performed to avoid the hazard situations without compromising the productivity. The tasks of this thesis will be to check the safety at different levels in the warehouse: at (1) robot level to ensure its safe operations like safe locomotion, safe pickup/drop, obstacle avoidance, to assess the safety of the task before assigning it to the robot, and (2) higher level to check the safety of the overall plan at the high level considering a holistic scenario of all robots. As such, the student will need to develop a risk assessment model to perform safety analysis and apply it in the warehouse usecase.
